Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

During the initial consultation, Dr. Hunziker explains that you must avoid certain activities before the procedure. You won’t be able to pluck, wax, or use electrolysis for at least six weeks prior to it. Waxing and plucking temporarily remove the hair roots, which the laser is designed to do permanently. Avoiding the sun for several weeks before and after treatment is important.

What happens during laser hair removal?

First, Dr. Hunziker’s technician prepares you for the procedure, trimming hair in the affected area and protecting your eyes with a special mask.

Dr. Hunziker’s Excel HR™ laser hair removal system combines a new high-powered laser with a proven “pulse” laser. He places a cooling aloe gel on your skin and uses a trademarked sapphire cooling device on the skin while he applies the lasers. The cooling device protects your skin from the heat from the lasers, but also helps the lasers remove the hair. Research finds that the cooling device with the gel prevents harmful chemicals from escaping into the air. Until recently, many clinicians used a cooling spray, which emits chemicals you shouldn’t breathe, requiring the use of masks, respirators, and smoke evacuators. With the cooling device and the powerful new lasers, the Excel HR™ is now the safest and most effective method of hair removal.

Dr. Hunziker applies the laser light to the affected area and examines it to ensure that your skin is reacting well to the treatment. The pigment in your hair follicles soak in the laser’s light, which destroys the hair. After the treatment, the technician applies cream and/or ice packs to soothe the affected skin. Dr. Hunziker may prescribe an anti-inflammatory cream for you to use at home for a few days, and you can apply cool compresses as well to relieve any minor discomfort.

How many treatments does laser hair removal require?

The treatment causes hair that was still growing to fall out over the next few weeks. You’ll schedule a second treatment four to six weeks from the first one. It may take a few treatments for your hair to stop growing completely. You’ll need to apply sunscreen to the affected skin for a month to ensure smooth skin color during the after-effects of the treatment.
