Back Pain Q & A

What is causing my back pain?

Back pain results from a number of causes:

  • Car accidents
  • Falls
  • Muscle strain
  • Bone fracture
  • Herniated disk
  • Bulging disk
  • Degenerating discs
  • Narrow spinal canal: spinal stenosis
  • Pinched nerve
  • Inflammation
  • Arthritis
  • Bone slipping out of place (spondylolisthesis), causing a disc to move forward over a vertebrae.

The joints, muscles, discs, and nerves in your back can come out of alignment from any of these conditions. Dr. Hunziker’s diagnosis pinpoints the cause of your discomfort and provides expert treatment.

What is the chiropractic treatment for back pain?

Rather than prescribing drugs, many of which have negative side effects, Dr. Hunziker uses manual manipulation techniques proven to relieve back pain.

Dr. Hunziker has you lie facedown on a special proprietary chiropractic table for the treatment. Using his hands, he gently stretches your spine in a rhythmic movement called the Cox Flexion Distraction Technique.

Your spine has protective discs between each bone to keep the bones from rubbing against each other. If you have bulges and cracks in one of your spinal discs, the treatment takes the pressure off of a large spinal nerve that is likely compressed from a damaged disc.

You may feel a release of pressure as Dr. Hunziker performs the chiropractic treatment. The technique smooths out dense connective tissue, or fascia, covering your muscles, bones, and nerves that have tightened and become stiff as a result of surrounding damage to the disks in your back. You may have knots, or “trigger points” of throbbing pain caused by the damaged fascia tissue. The treatments undo the knots and return the tissue to a healthier state.

Along with the chiropractic treatments, Dr. Hunziker may assign you simple back exercises that can help bring long-lasting relief. He prescribes physiotherapy for more severe or chronic pain, as well as extended chiropractic treatment.
