Spider Veins Q & A

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are small, swollen blood vessels that lie just underneath the outer layer of your skin. They are visible to the eye and can appear red, blue, or purplish in color. These small, uneven lines of veins can appear to crack as they turn and twist. You are most likely to see these veins on your face or legs.

What causes spider veins?

There are many factors that contribute to spider veins. They include:

  • Genetics
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Jobs that require standing for long periods
  • Hormonal changes such as pregnancy and menopause
  • Birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy, which also cause hormonal changes
  • Predisposition to blood clots
  • Factors that increase pressure on the abdomen such as constipation

What is the best treatment for removing spider veins?

Dr. Hunziker uses the newest technology to remove spider veins. The Cutera company, founded by laser and optical engineers, surveyed clinicians to determine what should be included in a new vascular laser. Cutera then developed the laser using the physician feedback. The new Cutera Excel V™ vascular laser enables Dr. Hunziker to customize your treatment based on your specific condition and the outcomes you want. The system is ideal for treating problems like spider veins. Other older surface laser treatments often produced disappointing results, including discoloration and even blisters. Older treatments also require injections into the veins and local anesthesia.

The Excel V™ is a solid state laser with two extremely precise laser wavelengths in one easy-to-use device. It gives clinicians the flexibility to treat all kinds of cases, from minor spider veins to large varicose veins and other vascular conditions.
